aj_hofacre's fault. ::nods sagely:: See, a while ago she wrote this fic: Transfer in which Becky, ultimate fangil, gets called as a slayer. I read it, loved it, and ended up writing a sequel.
Buffy eyed the scruffy man leaning against the wall. His clothes looked as if he'd just thrown on whatever he could find, he smelt like he’d taken a swim in a pool of booze, and he had a nervous air about him that had Buffy on edge. She would have labeled him creepy if Becky hadn't dragged the poor guy into the gym with her. Now she just felt sorry for him.
"So," Buffy said, watching as Chuck kept looking from Becky, who would stop mid-training to wave at him, to the ground, and briefly her face. "Prophet, huh."
"Uh, yeah," Chuck replied with a nervous laugh.
"How's that working out for, ya?"
Chuck gave her a confused look. "It sucks."
Buffy nodded her head, silent for a few seconds. Then she turned, eyes narrowed. Chuck shrank back a bit at the look on her face.
"Who the hell are Sam and Dean?"
Chuck swallowed, paling even more. "Um, they're demon hunters."
"So, they're just normal humans," Buffy said, arms crossing over her chest.
"I thought I was writing fiction, okay!" Chuck said, throwing his hands up. "How was I supposed to know they were real?"
"Wait," Buffy said, raising one hand. "You didn't know you were a prophet?"
"No," Chuck muttered miserably. Somehow he folded in on himself even more, reminding Buffy a kicked slightly creepy alcoholic puppy. "I didn't know until they showed up at my house. And then there were demons, and angels, and...I had an angel explode in my living room!"
"That," Buffy said with a firm nod, leaning her back against the wall. "Is so not fair. I'm the slayer. I should so have my own prophet."
"What?"
"I'm the Slayer," Buffy said, waving her hand. "I should have a prophet. Not two...guys."
"But-"
"I've slayed evil since I was fifteen," Buffy continued, overriding Chuck's words. "I've stopped dozens of apocalypses; I've even died and come back! Even Angel got a seer. What have these guys done? Huh? Nothing, that's what."
Chuck was silent for a few minutes, and when he spoke, his voice was soft. "They lost their mom to a demon when they were kids. Sam lost his girlfriend to the same demon twenty two years later. They've been hunting most of their lives. Dean went to hell for his brother. Then an angel resurrected him four months later. Now they have to save the world all the while trying to keep Michael, and Lucifer from taking their bodies for a drive. So while they may not have your mystical calling, they've done plenty."
Buffy was quiet, eyes downcast. Then she turned and kicked the wall. "No fair. You're not supposed to make me feel sorry for them."
"I...what?" Chuck said, a confused look on his face.
"Damn it!" Buffy grumbled before turning to Chuck. "Call them, and get them here. We've got a world to save."
Turning Buffy marched out of the gym; she really needed to go kill something.
