This is a drabble set during "All Hell Breaks Loose Part Two".

“One year.”
For a moment, a miniscule moment, Dean hesitated. He could clearly hear Sam’s voice in his head, begging, pleading with him not to do it. Dean shoved those words aside. Protecting Sam had been Dean’s job. When they had been small, when their father was away on a hunt, Dean protected Sam. He had failed. Now Sam was dead, and he shouldn’t be. Dean had been saved, twice, and both times someone else died in his place. But this time it was Sam who would be brought back, and Dean would die in his place. Sammy wouldn’t be dead. He took the deal.
